Senior girls advance to state championship game



MOULTRIE — Christy Harper went 4-for-4 with a home run and two doubles and also was the winning pitcher as the Colquitt County senior girls softball team defeated Vidalia 10-2 to advance to today’s GRPA state championship game in Seminole County.

Colquitt County has won three straight games in the tournament and will face either Vidalia or Ware County in the championship game at noon today.

After opening on Thursday with a 15-0 victory over Jones County, Colquitt County had a long wait before knocking off Wilkinson County 8-2 in their second game later that day.

Colquitt County scored eight runs in the top of the first and Wilkinson scored both of its runs in the bottom of the inning. There was no further scoring.

Harper had the big hit of the inning when she hit a ball that went through the outfield fencefor a ground rule double that drove in two runs.

Brooke Hood batted twice in the first inning and scored two runs.

The game was over late and the team had to be back in Seminole County at 10 a.m. Friday to meet Vidalia in the final winners bracket game of the eight-team tournament.

Vidalia scored a run in the top of the first and Colquitt County matched it in the bottom of the inning when Harper walked, stole second and scored on a double by Jana Harvin.

Colquitt took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, scoring three times.

Meagan May opened the inning with a double and went to third on Aubrey Anna Perryman’s single.

Harper drove both in with a double and scored her self on Harvin’s sacrifice fly.

Vidalia scored its other run in the top of the fourth.

Harper extended her team’s lead to 6-2 when she followed May’s double with a two-run home run.

Colquitt scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to end it.

Hannah Hancock and Hood opened the inning with singles and May drove in Hancock with a base hit. After Perryman sacrificed, Harper doubled in Hood and May and Kaley Clark closed out the scoring with a double to drive in Harper.
