Local shooters dominate Junior Olympics



MOULTRIE — Shane Slocumb of the South Georgia Youth Shooting Club was the overall grand champion at the Georgia-Alabama Junior Olympics trap shooting competition held recently at the Bridge Creek Shooting Range in Hartsfield.

The competition, which drew 61 shooters, was being held in Colquitt County for the fifth straight year.

Last year, the event drew just 42 youngsters.

Slocumb finished in a tie with Woodstock’s Dustin Anderson after finals with each having downed 139 targets.

Slocumb won in sudden death, leaving Anderson to take the silver medal.

Colquitt County’s Josh Webb took the broze medal with 135 targets.

Rounding out the top six were Jess Harless of Columbus, with 133 targets, and Trey Jones and Landon Bass of the local club, who had 128 and 127 targets respectively.

Trey Jones took the the gold medal in doubles with 167 targets.

“Trey Jones shot outstanding,” Coach Mike Simpson said.

Michael Henry of Emanuel County was second with 145 targets. The South Georgia club’s Braxton Jones was third.

Slocumb, Trey Jones and A.J. Aycock finished first among the scholastic teams.

The Columbus team of Michael Chambless, Jerry Hunter and Michael Hudson was second.

In third was the Adel trio of Spencer Ensley, Andrew Levitt and Justin Watson.

The local club swept the top three places in the intermediate team competition.

Winning the championship was the team of Tyler Lirio, Corey Davis and Dalton Thaggard.
