MOULTRIE — The 2008-2009 school year may not have appeared to be a particularly memorable one for Colquitt County athletics.

But, perhaps surprising, the school was the highest finishing Region 1-AAAAA school in the Georgia Athletic Directors Association’s Directors Cup.

Colquitt County finished 23rd out of 72 Class AAAAA schools in the standings with 545 points.

Tift County as 24th with 529 points and was followed by Lowndes, 27th, 439.5 points; Valdosta, 34th, 371 points; Houston County, 37th, 359.5 points; Warner Robins, 42nd, 287 points; Northside-Warner Robins, 50th, 226 points; and Coffee, 52nd, 223 points.

The GADA’s Directors Cup honors athletic departments in all Georgia High School Association classifications.

Points are awarded for placing in GHSA state playoffs. Results from region tournaments are not included.

A state champion receives 100 points and a runner-up receives 90 points.

The other top 32 teams receive points based on their finish.

Walton High was first in Class AAAAA with 1,057 points, and was followed by Parkview, Brookwood, Peachtree Ridge and Chapel Hill.

Camden County was the highest-finishing South Georgia school, coming in eighth with 804 points.

Colquitt County was the highest finisher among Region 1-AAAAA girls teams, coming in 18th overall with 337 points. Tift County was next at 24th place with 288 points.

Lowndes was the highest finisher among the Region 1-AAAAA boys team, coming in at No. 16 with 280.5 points.

Colquitt County was 29th overall and fourth among Region 1-AAAAA teams, with 208 points.

Colquitt County overall point total was led by the girls golf team’s second-place finish in the state tournament, which earned 90 points.

The other top-four point earners for Colquitt County were the girl tennis team, 83 points for a final four finish; boys golf team, 80 points for a fourth place finish at the state tournament; and the boys tennis team, 70 points for its final 8 appearance.
