Freeman back with Brooks County

MOULTRIE — In 1994, while Colquitt County was winning the Class AAAA state championship, down near the other end of Tallokas Road, Brooks County was winning the Class A state title.

Leading the Trojans that season was first-year coach Maurice Freeman.

Freeman coached the Trojans three more seasons, leaving for Southwest Macon after posting a 37-14 in his first head coaching job. After spending four years at Southwest and six more at Brunswick, Freeman has returned to Quitman.

Freeman takes over a program that went 5-5 in 2006 and 3-7 last year after going 9-3 in 2005 under Ryan Branch.

Branch resigned after last season and has taken over the Berrien program.

The Region 1-AA Trojans have several key returning starters, including quarterback Jeremy Cody and running back Martez Christopher, who rushed for 750 yards and averaged 8.8 yards per carry as a sophomore last season.

The defense will be led by 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker Arlestor McKinnon.

Brooks County will open the regular season on Aug. 29 at home against Region 5-A’s Fellowship Christian Paladins out of Roswell.

The Trojans will play in a Region 2-AA that also includes Cook, Early County, Fitzgerald, Mitchell County and Thomasville.
