Pack falls to Brooks County in scrimmage

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County football coach Rush Propst said that over the past nine seasons, his offenses have traditionally been stronger in the second and fourth quarters.

But on Thursday, Propst’s first Packers team was more impressive in the third quarter, when it scored both of its touchdowns in a three-quarter 22-12 loss to Brooks County in the annual preseason scrimmage held at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The fourth quarter was played by the junior varsity teams.

Brooks led 22-0 at the half as the Packers struggled in all three aspects of the game: offense, defense and special teams.

But in the third quarter, a 60-yard run by Eric Key set up the Packers first score, a 1-yard run by Travon Littleton.

After forcing the Trojans to turn the ball over on downs, the Packers drove 71 yards on 13 plays to another touchdown, an 18-yard toss from quarterback John Michael Harrison to Quin Roberson with 50.6 seconds left in the quarter.

Key, Roberson and Jacob Propst had big first-down catches in the drive.

Colquitt was unsuccessful on an onside kick and moments later the JVs took over.

Harrison completed 17-of-32 passes for 172 yards and the one touchdown. He also threw one interception.

Key was the leading rusher with 85 yards on six carries, including the 60-yard romp that appeared to rouse the Packers from their offensive doldrums.

Key, the senior All-Region players, also caught two passes for 15 yards.

Littleton and Jacob Propst each had four catches and Roberson had three.

The Packers escaped playing in the rain, but did not play well in the first two quarters.

Colquitt won the toss and elected to defer its decsion to the second half.

Brooks County took the opening kickoff and struck quickly, driving 80 yards on eight plays to the first score of the game.
