MOULTRIE — Hartsfield’s South Georgia Youth Shooting Club will send 16 of its members to compete in this weekend’s Junior Olympic trap championships.
The Junior Olympics will begin Sunday and run through Wednesday at the International Shooting Park on the Fort Carson Military Reservation in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Georgia will be well-represented,” Coach Mike Simpson said. “It’s by invitational only and you have to qualify to get an invitation.
“These are the best of the best.”
Representing the Colquitt County club, which trains at Simpson’s facility on the Dunn Road in Hartsfield, will be A.J. Aycock, Landon Bass, Taylor Bentley, John Buxton, Michael Henry, Trey Jones, Braxton Jones, Zack Gibbs, Hunter Hancock, Ashli Pope, Tyler Raulerson, Shane Slocumb, Austin Thaggard, Dalton Thaggard, Justin Watson and Josh Webb.
Simpson said that official training will be held on Saturday and competition in both single and double trap will begin on Sunday.
“These kids have worked extremely hard,” Simpson said. “We expect to do pretty well. And we’ve got several who could do real well.”
Simpson said veteran shooters Webb and Slocumb “should be right at the top.” Both are members of the National Team.
Webb appears ready to have an outstanding performance.
“Josh has really got it all together,” Simpson said. “He is as focused as I’ve ever seen him.”
The South Georgia Youth Shooting Club played host to the Georgia and Alabama Junior Olympics in June.
At that competition, 26 club members qualified for the National Junior Olympics championships.
