MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls softball team won its finals three games in the Watermelon Festival tournament in Cordele and claimed the event’s silver division championship.
The Lady Packers dropped their first two games Friday night, but began a three-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory over tournament host Crisp County.
Colquitt won both of its Saturday games.
“We saw a lot of good things,” said Coach Carman Phillips. “The girls are hitting well and know what they are capable of.”
Starting pitcher Christy Harper developed a sore arm during the tournament, but Hannah Hancock got the victories over Appling County and Turner County on Saturday.
“Hannah jumped up and did a spectacular job,” Phillips said.
The Lady Packers were still feeling the effects of a virus that affected several members of the team.
Colquitt lost its first game in Cordele on Frdiay, falling to Woodland High of Henry County 5-3.
Hancock pitched and struck out six.
Maggie Davidson had a pair of doubles and Meagan May had a single in the game.
In their first pool play game, Colquitt fell to Berrien County 11-2.
May and Davidson each had two hits and Brooke Hood and Aubrey Perryman each had one.
“We were real flat on Friday,” Phillips said. “We had to travel Tuesday and Thursday and then again on Friday.”
But the Lady Packers began playing better in the final game on Friday, defeating Crisp County.
Harper started and went the first three inning, giving up one hit and striking out three. Hancock came on and finished up.
Hood had two hits and Davidson, Jana Harvin and Caitlin Carr each had one hit.
“That was an exciting game,” Phillips said.
The excitement carried over to Saturday.
In their first game, the Lady Packers defeated Phillips’ alma mater Appling County 4-3.
Harper was unable to pitch, but Hancock picked up the slack, striking out four Lady Pirates and picking up the victory.
Colquitt scored three runs in the third and the eventual game-winner in the fifth.
Hood and Kaley Clark each had two hits in the game and Davidson and Bria Wallace each had one.
The victory sent the Lady Packers to the silver division championship game where they blanked Turner County behind the pitching of Hancock, who allowed just two hits and struck out four. May, Clark and Wallace each had hits in the game for the Lady Packers.
After winning three of five games in Cordele, the Lady Packers raised their record to 7-6-1.
The road gets more difficult, however.
On Tuesday, the Colquitt County girls will play host to Lowndes at Packer Park in a game that will not count in the Region 1-AAAAA standings.
On Thursday, the Lady Packers will bus to Douglas for a Region 1-AAAAA game with Coffee.
After the trip to play Coffee, Colquitt County will have three straight home dates, meeting Valdosta on Tuesday, Sept. 16, Northside on Thursday, Sept. 18 and Tift County on Tuesday Sept. 23.
