MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County softball team won the play-in game in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament being played at Freedom Park in Valdosta, but then eliminated after being shut out by Lowndes and Valdosta.

The tournament, which will determin the region’s four teams that will advance to the state sectionals, will continue on Saturday.

Colquitt County and Coffee, which tied for last place in region during the regular season with 1-11 records, met for the third time in tournament opener.

The two had split their earlier meetings, with Colquitt winning in Douglas 6-2 and Coffee winning in Moultrie 3-2.

After Thursday’s game was tied 5-5 after seven innings, the tie-breaker was employed.

Coffee scored one run in the top of the eighth, but Lunden Connell drove in the two deciding runs in the bottom of the inning in the 7-6 victory.

Brittney Sikes led the Lady Packers with three hits, including a double. Connell and Lori Griner each had two hits. Ashley Skeen added a double and Tiffany Troup had a single.

Harley Grimm was the starting pitcher. Camille James pitched the final three innings.

But after getting their 10th victory of the season, the Lady Packers were unable to score again.

Lowndes sent Colquitt to the losers bracket with an 8-0 victory.

Griner, Sikes, Kaley Clark and Aubrey Anna Perryman had the only Colquitt County hits.

In the losers bracket, Colquitt met Valdosta, which had been defeated earlier by Tift County 3-2.

Lady Wildcats pitcher Bridget Walker struck out 12 Lady Packers and allowed just four hits in a 4-0 victory that ended Colquitt County’s season. Valdosta scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break open what had been a close game.

Brooke Hood led the Lady Packers with two hits. Skeen and Clark each had doubles.

Valdosta advanced to second losers bracket game against Lowndes, which had been defeated in the winners bracket by Tift County 3-0.
