MOULTRIE — Northside-Warner Robins used a five-run fifth inning to eliminate Colquitt County from the Region 1-AAAAA softball tournament in Cordele on Friday.
Despite the 5-3 loss to the Lady Eagles, the Colquitt girls will advance to the South Sectional and will play at 4 p.m. Friday in Hampton.
The Lady Packers will take a 16-14-1 record into the Sectional and already have posted the most victories for a Colquitt County fast-pitch team since the school began playing the sport in 2001.
The Lady Packers outhit Northside 7-4, but poor defense in the fifth led Northside to the big inning.
Colquit scored two runs in the first inning and the two-run lead held up until the fifth.
“It was tough,” said Colquitt County Coach Carman Phillips. “The girls hit the ball well. If we can ever hit and play defense together ...”
Caitlin Carr led the Lady Packers with two hits. Brooke Hood, Meagan May, Maggie Davidson, Kaley Clark and Christy Harper each had one hit.
The Lady Packers needed to win two games in the tournament to advance.
Colquitt lost its opener on Tuesday, falling to Northside 8-2. Later in the day, the Lady Packers eliminated Coffee with a 14-6 victory.
On Wednesday, the Lady Packers got the victory they needed to qualify for the Sectionals when they edged Valdosta 2-1.
Colquitt scored the winning run in bottom of the seventh when Caitlin Carr singled and one out later Meagan May received an intentional walk.
Maggie Davidson then got a two-out hit to load the bases.
Kaley Clark’s infield grounder was mishandled and Blanca Fuentes, who had run for Carr, scored the winning run.
After beating Valdosta on Wednesday, the Lady Packers were scheduled to play Northside, but the game was rained out and rescheduled for Thursday.
The game was rained out again and scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday.
