MOULTRIE — Ryan Helms will go for four straight state high school championships in a couple months.
And next month he is likely to decide which college will be the beneficiary of his considerable diving talents.
But for now, the Colquitt County High senior and Moss Farms diver is concentrating on getting ready to represent the United States in the Junior Pan American Diving Championships.
The meet will feature the top young divers from five countries and will be held at the San Juan Natatorium in San Juan Puerto Rico. Competition will run from Nov. 1-4.
“Basically, this is the first time I will dive for the U.S. team,” Helms said Monday before his afternoon practice at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center. “This is a big meet in my life. It will be good experience for me.”
Helms qualified for the Junior Pan Am team with his second-place finishes on both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards in the boys 16-18 age group at last summer’s Junior National Championships in Mission Viejo, Calif.,
The other two members of the 16-18 boys contingent are Harrison Jones and Drew Livingston.
Jones won the 1-meter event and was fifth on 3-meter. Livingston took the gold medal in the 3-meter event and was third on 1-meter.
Livingston and Jones are members of the outstanding Woodlands, Texas, program.
“I respect them a lot,” Helms said. “We’re all good friends. I’ve known them since I started and we’re always excited to see each other.
“We’re all competitive divers. We’ll give each other a little push.”
The coaches accompanying the team will be Bob Gunter, Oleg Andriyuk, Sean McCarthy, Eric Barnes and Wendy Lerew, the wife of former Moss Farms coach Jay Lerew.
Wendy Lerew will serve as the coach for Helms in Puerto Rico.
Helms is still undergoing rehab on a wrist that he had surgery on last year. The sore wrist kept him from competing on tower at Junior Nationals. He said he has been doing some diving off the 7-meter platform and hopes to be able to do his complete tower list by summer.
Helms said his training for the Junior Pan Am Championships is similar to what he used to get ready for Junior Nationals, except that he is unable to put in the same amount of time that he did during the summer.
