Colquitt splits basketball scrimmages

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls basketball team prepared for next week’s season-opener by going on the road to defeat Cairo 52-34 on Tuesday in the preseason scrimmage.

“This game was good for our confidence,” said Lady Packers coach Rondesha Williams. “But we’ve still got a lot of things to work on.”

The Lady Packers were led by Umeika Henry, who scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds.

“Umeika had a great game,” Williams said. “I can see her game improving every day, both offensively and defensively.”

Shay Lovett and Sarah Strong each had nine points. Persephone Taylor and Miranda Trim each had six and Kwant’esha Love, Bria Wallace and Ketoria Peterson each had four.

The Colquitt County boys were victimized by a 3-pointer with a five seconds left and fell to the Syrupmakers 46-45.

“They played hard,” Coach Kirven Davis said of his team. “The effort was there both offensively and defensively.

“We made some mental mistakes down the stretch, but that was mostly from inexperience.”

Senior All-Region player Nate Hill led the Packers with 13 points and Lawhe Wingfield added 10.

Cornelius James had eight, Luis Ballenilla had five and Kyle Tolbert chipped in four.

“Kyle played the point for us and did a good job,” Davis said. “He handled the pressure well.”

Colquitt County will open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 27, at Worth County.

The Packers and Lady Packers will play for the first time this season at the Espy Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 27, when they play host to Monroe.
