MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County eighth-grade basketball teams bounced back from a pair of lopsided losses to Valdosta by sweeping Hahira on Tuesday at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium.

The Lady Packers had been defeated by the Lady Wildcats 45-19 last Friday, but pulled a one-sided victory of its own on Tuesday, winning 34-17.

The eighth-grade boys got rid of the bitter taste of a 39-20 loss to Valdosta by thumping Hahira 43-15.

Octavius Jackson scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds in the first half as the eighth-grade Packers took a 22-7 lead into the break.

Colquitt County coach Roger Jones then turned much of the rest of the game over to his reserves, and they played well.

“Our young guys really stepped it up and did a good job,” Jones said. “We spend a lot of time getting those guys ready to play.

“All of our guys played well today, but especially the guys off the bench.”

Jackson had six points and seven rebounds in the first quarter as the Packers, now 2-1, broke out to a 10-3 lead.

He added another basket and a rebound in the second quarter and finished with a team-high eight points.

But Jackson was just one of 13 Packers who scored in the game.

Sam Howard came off the bench to score seven; Creig Harris added five in the fourth quarter; Nate Madison had four; Raheem McClendon and Carlos Johnson had three; Deonte Johnson, Jeffery Davis, Darrell Phillips, Rashawn Edwards, Quin Osby and Quen Jenkins each had two; and Caleb Brown added a free throw.

The Colquitt County girls began the sweep by scoring the first eight points of the game en route to their victory over the Vikettes.

Cheyenne Reynolds led the Lady Packers with 18 points and also controlled the boards.

Reynolds had six of her points in the second quarter when Colquitt County outscored the Vikettes 11-1. She added eight more points in the fourth quarter.

Ja’Nice Sailor got the Lady Packers going, scoring six points in the first quarter. She finished with eight points.
