Colquitt County will play host to the Georgia Special Olympics Area 14 Winter Games today.
It will be the 32nd time Colquitt County has played host to the Games.
And the event is expanding this year.
Some 300 athletes and their partners will compete in nine events at venues throughout the county.
Artistic gymnastics, one of this year’s new events, will be held at the Moultrie YMCA.
Those attending today’s 9:30 a.m. Opening Ceremonies at the Willie J. Williams Middle School gymnasium will witness a demonstration of the sport. The Opening Ceremonies also will feature a performance by the Colquitt County High School 50th Regiment Band and comments from Colquitt County Schools Superintendent Dr. Samuel DePaul.
Competition will begin immediately following the Opening Ceremonies.
And those taking part in team floor hockey will remain in the Willie J. Williams gymnasium for their competition.
The team basketball competition will be held on the William Bryant Court at the Gladys Espy Gymnasium.
Roller skating competition will be held at Freckles Skate Center on the Quitman Highway.
The Tommy Meredith Memorial Gymnasium will play host to the basketball individual skills, Level A basketball skills, Olympic basketball skills and team basketbal skills competitions.
Winter Games’ Special Olympics young athlete competition will be held in Room 703 at Willie J. Williams Middle School.
Longtime Colquitt County Special Olympics coordinator Grant Hammack said volunteers from around the community will turn out to help put on the Games.
Competition should conclude around 1-1:15 p.m.
