MOULTRIE — The National Science Center brought its semi truck and science teaching program to Colquitt County this week. The program was at Stringfellow Elementary School Tuesday after visits to Willie J. Williams Middle School and C.A. Gray Middle School.

Instructor Calvin Marschall said the program is designed for third- through ninth-grade students. It is made possible by cooperation between the National Science Center in Augusta, Ga., and the U.S. Army. After leaving Moultrie, the truck visited Valdosta Wednesday and will be in Cairo today, with stops planned in Bainbridge and Blakely before going into Alabama.

The purpose of the program is to give hands-on demonstrations to younger students, Marschall said. The students were shown demonstrations using items such as the Van de Graaff generator, Tesla coils, a plasma ball and pictures to show how the eye’s rods and cones work.

“We want to try and show how science can be fun,” Marschall said.

The program is free to schools, but Marschall said schools or their systems request an appearance. The two semi trucks tour across the nation, usually over a nine-to 10-month period, and their schedule is determined by what area of the country the trucks are covering at any given time.

Marschall said the programs can be tailored to any time limit, with Stringfellow taking classes through a 50-minute program. Anyone who is interested in finding out more information can visit the National Science Center’s Web site at www.ncsdicovery.org. Free demonstration videos are available for viewing on the Web site as well as appearance request information.

In addition to the program, Marschall said the center was promoting its eCybermission year-long science challenge contest for student in the sixth through ninth grade. The program pits teams from across the nation to identify a community problem and use science, math and technology to find a solution, with savings bonds being awarded to winners.
