FLETCHER, N.C. — Carl Edward Porter, 96, of Fletcher, N.C., and formerly of Moultrie, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at Elizabeth Hospice House in Flat Rock, N.C.

Graveside rites will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Schley Cemetery in Moultrie with the Rev. Julian Griner officiating.

Born March 30, 1912, in Bartow County, Ga., he was the son of the late William Harrison Porter and Ferby Malissa Watkins Porter. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of Mill Springs Baptist Church in Mill Springs, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Moody Porter; one son, Charles Robert Porter; nine brothers, Hugh, Ernest, Clarence, James, Alonzo, Willie, Levi, Woodrow and Arthur Porter; and one sister, Sarah Mixon.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis Porter and wife Denise of Laurens, S.C., and Marvin Porter of Hendersonville, N.C.; one daughter, Mary Porter Harwood of Ashboro, N.C.; eight grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Patsy and Johnny Norman of Moultrie.

Cobb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
