BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. — Coney Lee Carter, 83, of Brooks County, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at the Langdale Hospice House following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Welcome Hill Church of Christ with Jerry Herring and Jim Lee officiating. He will lie in state in the church from 10 a.m. until service time and burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Born on July 14, 1925, in Lowndes County, Ga., he was the son of the late Hiram and Pearl Carter and he was a lifelong resident of Brooks County. He was retired from Strickland Cotton Mills and began Bass Hunter Boat Co. in 1978. He was a member of Welcome Hill Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Marene Hutchinson Carter; a son, Jerome W. Carter; three brothers, Charlie Carter, Albert Carter, and Mark Carter; and a sister, Dora Carter Youmans.

He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Bobby Lee and Jeanette Carter, Ray Vernon and Barbara Carter, Melvin Claude Carter all of Brooks County and James Raymond and Lisa Carter of Moultrie; 12 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a niece, Linda Gibson; a sister-in-law, Greta Carter of Gainesville, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Freida M. Carter; two brothers, Pafford Carter of Statenville, Ga. and Dick Carter of Florida; and five sisters, Leona Upchurch of Clyattville, Ga., Flora Warren of Virginia, Shirly Walters and Pearly Walters of Louisiana, and Susie Hooper of Arizona.

The family will receive friends today, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home.
