UNION CITY, Ga. — Glenn Myron Oxley, 81, of Union City died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at the Southwest Christian Care Hospice in Union City.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at First Presbyterian Church.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Mr. Oxley was the son of the late Harry Oxley and the late Myrna Oxley. He served in the U.S. Navy before attending Virginia Tech on a football scholarship. While there, he met and married his wife of 52 years, the late Meta Ann Chestnutt.

He had been a resident of Moultrie since 1969, working for Tucker Aluminum, Riverside Industries, the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Department and the Colquitt County Correctional Institute. He also did substitute teaching in the Moultrie schools after his retirement.

He was very active in volunteer work, including holding many leadership positions in the local Red Cross, United Way and Youth Center. He also served as a coach for Midget football, Junior League baseball and YMCA basketball as well as umpiring football, baseball, softball and basketball games for many years. He also delivered Meals On Wheels and volunteered many hours at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Meta Chestnutt Oxley; and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Oxley.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Jean McDaniel and husband Dennis of Fayetteville; two sons, Gregg Edward Oxley of Gordonsville, Va., and Glenn Michael Oxley and wife Cathy of Corbin, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Jessica McDaniel, Joshua Oxley, David Oxley and Grace Oxley.

Cremation Society of the South in Stockbridge is in charge of arrangements.
