MOULTRIE, Ga. — Coastal Plains Education Charter High School is set to officially open in Moultrie with an open house 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at the Colquitt County High School.
Site directors Renee Tucker and Sharon Veasey invite new and prospective students, along with their families, to attend.
Classes are slated to begin the following day, Aug. 15, and will be held 4-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
Coastal Plains is a public charter high school with a statewide attendance zone, meaning any Georgia student age 14 to 20 may attend tuition-free. Students who complete the necessary classwork will earn an accredited Georgia High School Diploma.
Coastal Plains is a second-chance high school, designed to meet the needs of a variety of students, according to a press release from the school.
“For some students, traditional high school classes are not a good fit,” the release said. “Some students have full-time jobs. Others must balance school with caring for a child. Some students simply enjoy the smaller environment with the flexible classroom structure.”
To help students succeed, Coastal Plains has numerous advantages, the school said.
“The school supports a blended learning environment,” the release said. “Here, a student works at his or her own pace on the computer with a certified teacher in the classroom at all times. With a low student-to-teacher ratio of 15:1, students can be given much more attention than in a regular classroom. The smaller classes allow more individual attention for each student. Another advantage is that attendance is accommodating, allowing students to come to classes at a time that works for them. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, from 4-9 p.m., and run year-round, so students can enroll anytime throughout the year.”
Coastal Plains said its model allows students great flexibility as well as a strong support system. All students are paired with a mentor, a counselor, a graduation coach and, if needed, a tutor. These professionals help ensure that each student stays on track and has all the support needed to finish school and obtain a high school diploma.
Coastal Plains Education Charter High School campuses are designed not to compete with local schools, but rather to complement them, the release said. Each of the school boards in the counties where Coastal Plains sites are located has entered into a partnership with the school, with several superintendents from the partnering school systems serving on the Coastal Plains governance board.
Coastal Plains Charter High School currently operates campuses in Candler, Glynn, Long, Lowndes, Toombs, Jeff Davis, Wayne, Camden, Liberty, and Screven counties and is opening sites in Colquitt, Coffee and Evans counties this fall.
