MOULTRIE — Jenna Hagler, Bryson Griner, Jonathan Meadows, and Hunter Caley of Colquitt County High School attended the University of Georgia Tour of Technology hosted by UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources on Feb. 5.

The purpose of the tour is to give students a first-hand look at the university’s flagship academic and research facilities. Students spent the day visiting with faculty and current students about opportunities in agriscience as well as college life.

Students who took part in the tour are all nominees for the Governor’s Honors Program in agriscience. The Governor’s Honors Program is a six-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

The agriculutre education agriscience and biotechnology component of the Governor’s Honors Program provides experience for outstanding students in biotechnology for plants and animals while the environmental science component focuses more on wildlife, land use and the environment.

This program is designed to provide a comprehensive contemporary program of research-based agriscience for the career-bound agriculture student. Students need to be competent and up-to-date in these fields in order to better understand the agriculture industry as well as the products, production and use.

The nominees were interviewed at the University of Georgia the following morning. Judges based their selections on a combination of the students’ proven academic ability, resume, portfolio, desired to participate, and their involvement in the FFA and/or other student agriculture related leadership positions.

Students will be notified the first week of April if they are selected to participate in the prestigious summer program.
