MOULTRIE — A Moultrie church is asking the community to join them in a worldwide effort to unite humanity Saturday.

The Rev. Paul Hayes, pastor of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC), said his church will hold a World Missions Walk-A-Thon starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. It will be held on the walking trail behind Mack Tharpe Stadium and will be part of a national COGIC effort to have as many as 100,000 people walking here and in 58 other countries.

“We’re the little guys down here,” Hayes said, “but we’re doing our part to help. We want to unify everybody.”

The walk-a-thon is being held to unify the community and to spread awareness about world missions work. The event is the first time anyone has attempted to bring together organizations such as churches, businesses, families and individuals in an effort to stand as one community for missions, Hayes said.

“This is something we’re all concerned about,” Hayes said. “We’re just trying to unify everyone under a common goal. It is designed for the community at large to unify and come together under one accord for humanity.”

Anyone is invited to attend, and Hayes said groups who come are encouraged to bring banners, wear T-shirts or any other items identifying their organization. The event is scheduled to conclude around 1 p.m., but it will remain active as long as people want to stay and hang around. Those who are unable to walk can still come and show their support, he said.
