MOULTRIE — The mentors of Colquitt County have had a great start this school year. On Wednesday, Dec. 5, Communities in Schools Colquitt County held its annual Holiday Mentor Luncheon.

More than 150 mentors, school staff, principals, and others showed up to share a good meal and their passion for the success of children. The luncheon was held in the R.D. Smith Youth Center where entertainment was provided by several of the CIS after school program students.

“It was a wonderful program and we are happy to recognize the faithful efforts of our mentors,” said Denise Bell, CIS of Colquitt County’s executive director.

Under the management of Sam Baker and Shannon Hall, CIS of Colquitt County’s Mentoring Initiative serves 220 students in all 14 schools in the Colquitt County School System. They currently have about 200 mentors serving in the schools. Many of them serve more than one student.

Hall and Baker said they were astounded at the efforts of all of these people. However, they always need more mentors because there will always be another student who needs encouragement and support, they said. They said their mentors are dedicated to helping kids stay in school and prepare for life.

Anyone interested in becoming a mentor, may call Baker or Hall at Communities in Schools of Colquitt County Inc. 985-9577 or e-mail sbaker@colquitt.k12.ga.us or shall@colquitt.k12.ga.us.
