MOULTRIE -- CVS Pharmacy plans to build a new free standing store on South Main Street at the corner of 11th Avenue Southeast.

Moultrie's Zoning Board of Adjustment and Appeals approved this week variances for properties CVS plans to buy. Zoning board Chairman Bill Christopher said the board has no reservations approving the variances.

The new store would supplant One Stop convenience store, Dalton's restaurant and an adjacent residential lot all along South Main.

The new CVS will be 1 1/2 times bigger than the store on South Main Street, said Roger King, city utilities director who attended the zoning meetings. King said the contractor representing CVS, Metro Group Development of Atlanta, indicated that at least one of Moultrie's two current stores will close to accommodate the new store.

"What they're proposing is a nice looking structure. It will improve that little corner," he said.

Dalton's Chicken Manager Patsy Akridge wouldn't go into detail about any pending real estate deals, but did say that Dalton's would move elsewhere if a deal goes through.

A rezoning request for the residential lot will go before the city council for approval. The council's final decisions should be made by Oct. 5, Teresa Cornwell of the city planning department said.

CVS has more than 4,100 stores in 34 states, nine distribution centers, regional offices across the country, and a store support center in Woonsocket, R.I., the CVS Web site said.
