A man with a 12-pack of beer and no way to get home Sunday stole a car and crashed into a mail box before abandoning it a short distance away.

Officers were dispatched at 9:47 p.m. to the 100 block of Dogwood Drive after Wesley Beamon reported that someone had hit his mail box.

Beamon reported that he heard the sound of tires and saw a speeding black car with only the parking lights on just before the collision.

As Beamon was inspecting the damage, a man later identified as Mario Delion, who lives on the same block, approached and told him that his car had been stolen, Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office reports said. Beamon called 911 and Delion ran away.

A short time later an officer found Delion’s 2004 Saturn Ion abandoned on Dogwood Drive where Delion also was found.

Delion told officers that a man with beer approached him, asked for a ride and then pulled him out of the car before driving away on Sardis Church Road.

The car, which had no valid insurance, had damage to the passenger side, mirror and windshield, sheriff’s reports said.

Delion described the thief as a Hispanic male about 27 years old wearing a black and white striped shirt, blue jeans and red bandana.
