MOULTRIE, Ga. — Last week’s Edible Book Fair in the C.A. Gray Junior High media center was the biggest and best yet, school officials said.

Students and staff competed across four judged categories with projects that represent books with food. The materials included anything from the classic cake/icing combo to kiwis, pretzels, pickles, pudding and more. Melissa Tillman, media clerk, set an entry goal of fifty people for this year – which was exceeded by five. That number is double the participation from 2019.

In addition to the judged categories, students and staff can also place in a category called “People’s Choice.” The 8th and 9th grade literature classes all visit the media center during the first five periods of the day so that their students can peruse the projects and pick their favorite. The voting tokens are then tallied, and the winners are declared at the end of the day. Melanie Turner, media specialist, commented that it is fun to listen to the walk-throughs when students exclaim “That is so creative!” or staff ask “How did she think of that?!” New ideas are born each year – inspired by the last.

The major community sponsors for the event were Moultrie Chick-fil-A and Moultrie Publix. Gatlyn Peacock, representing Chick-fil-A, brought the famous cow to pose for pictures with students, donated prizes for the awards ceremony, and served as judge for the competition. Publix bakery manager Katie Wells donated cake domes for projects, served as a judge, and baked a beautiful cake for the awards ceremony.
