MOULTRIE — Harvey’s Supermarket on First Avenue Southeast temporarily closed its doors Monday following a kitchen fire Monday morning.

The Moultrie Fire Department was called to the supermarket at 1209 First Avenue Southeast at 10:38 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from inside, and they found a rotisserie oven on fire in the deli department.

Employees used a fire extinguisher to contain the fire, and firefighters extinguished the fire, also using extinguishers. There was heavy fire damage to the oven, and there was light smoke damage to the kitchen area and the entire store. The cause of the fire, however, could not be found following an investigation.

Firefighters set up ventilation fans to remove the smoke from inside the store. Because of the fire, however, the store manager closed the supermarket to clean up the kitchen and to discard inventory damaged by smoke. The store reopened Tuesday.
