MOULTRIE -- Fire destroyed a mobile home Wednesday morning, displacing eight people who lived inside.
Culbertson, Southside and Berlin volunteer fire departments responded to two house fire calls about 10:50 a.m. at the mobile home at 207 Levi Road, Culbertson Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Patrick Stowe said. The home was engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived.
No one was injured in the fire, and Stowe said no one was inside when the fire was ignited. The cause of the fire was unknown, he said, and the home was a total loss before the firefighters even arrived at the scene.
Stowe said a nearby resident and a passer-by notified the Colquitt County 911 Center about smoke coming from the mobile home.
In order for the volunteer firefighters to extinguish the fire, Stowe said they had to take off the mobile home's roof and roll it back away from the interior.
Helen Sewell, executive director for the Colquitt County Red Cross chapter, said Manuel Antonio, his wife, their four children and two brothers lived in the mobile home. The Red Cross has provided the family shelter at a local motel and given them a voucher for food and clothing from Wal-Mart.
