MOULTRIE — Gunfire that erupted in the pre-dawn of Saturday may be linked to gang activitiy.

A Moultrie police officer was called to Garden Villa Drive after gunshots were fired early Saturday morning. No one was injured in the shooting, but witnesses stated a large group was fighting in the road, and the officer found possible gang symbols spray-painted on the road.

Police reports said the officer was called to the scene at 12:22 a.m. Saturday after a resident reported hearing gunshots. The officer searched the area but was unable to locate anyone related to the incident.

The officer talked with two residents of Garden Villa Drive, and reports said one of the residents stated he did not know who fired the shots. He did tell the officer there was a large group of people fighting in the street, and it was someone from that group fired a gun.

A second resident stated he did not hear any gunshots but did see a large group fighting in the street, reports said. A third resident was also at the scene but did not tell the officer anything.

Reports said the officer searched Garden Villa Drive and found several shell casings from a .22-caliber weapon near the driveway of a residence. The officer also found several places where signs, such as “forest hill boys,” “block boys” and “SSd” had been spray painted on the road.

The officer was given the names of several suspects related to the fight, but reports said he was unable to make contact with any of them at the time of report.

Several months ago, gang activity was cited when a group of young men approached a northwest residence and threatened an occupant there. Police reports at that tiime said it was in retaliation of a young man who had refused to join a gang. No one was arrested in that incident.

At least one other incident was investigated where gang symbols had been spray painted on s urrounding property.

Calls to The Moultrie Observer have indicated that gang activity does exist in the community.
