MOULTRIE — The Moultrie man who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at Colquitt Regional Medical Center Wednesday afternoon remained in critical condition Thursday.

Charles “Charlie” Hamiton Sr., 49, of 2312 Sylvester Drive, was brought to the emergency room by his son about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, complaining of several medical problems, Moultrie Police Sgt. Roger Lindsay said. He shot himself in a bathroom at the ER waiting room.

Colquitt Regional Medical Center Hospital Administrator Jim Lowery said no immediate changes to security have been planned for the hospital. The staff will compare at CRMC’s security to that at other area hospitals to see if the hospital is as safe as is needed for its employees and patients.

The shooting is an unfortunate event, Lowery said, and he hopes he will never see an incident like this one happen again.

Hamilton went inside the bathroom at the ER’s waiting room, and Lindsay said his son stated he heard a single gunshot. He told officers he heard Hamilton in the bathroom with a pistol but was unable to get inside to prevent him from firing it.

When the son and a witness were able to unlock the bathroom door, Lindsay said they found Hamilton with a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head area. Moultrie police officers found a 9 mm pistol inside the bathroom, and the son identified the gun as Hamilton’s.

The son told officers he did not know Hamilton had brought the gun with him to the ER, Lindsay said. A second witness told officers Hamilton had only been at the ER for about 10 minutes before the incident took place, and that Hamilton had signed in about 3:21 p.m. Wednesday.

Police reports said Hamilton was taken into the ER for treatment of the gunshot wound immediately after he was found in the bathroom.

Lindsay said Hamilton’s son believes the medical problems his father complained of were the reason for shooting himself. He could not elaborate on what medical conditions Hamilton suffered from at the time of the incident.
