MOULTRIE — The driver of a truck that hit and killed two pedestrians on Veterans Parkway early Tuesday morning told Moultrie police officers he did not see them until just before hitting them.

Police reports said Kevin K. Gomes, 46, of 8383 Five Forks Road in Boston, Ga., told officers he was driving home on Veterans Parkway from his job in Tifton. As he approached the Overlook Drive intersection at 1:43 a.m. Tuesday, he saw two men standing in the right lane waving their arms.

Gomes was driving his Chevrolet C1500 truck at about 50 mph, reports said.

Reports said the two men, Joshua Lynn Graham, 21, of 1620 Overlook Drive, and Kyle Myers, 17, of 808-C Third Ave. S.E., were knocked onto the truck’s hood. They were carried on the hood and grill for 58 feet down Veterans Parkway before falling back onto the road.

Both men were found more than 100 feet away from the initial site of impact.

Officers investigating the accident scene found a variety of items, including shoes, a baseball cap and a cell phone all around the area, reports said. Officers also found evidence that matched Gomes’ statements, and he was neither cited nor charged in the accident. There has been no explanation as to why the two young men were in the road at that tiime of morning.

Reports said the accident is under investigation by the Moultrie Police Department with no official determinations or conclusions. Blood samples were taken from Gomes, Graham and Myers for toxicology tests to be conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
