MOULTRIE, Ga. — A former Colquitt County man faces incest and other charges related to the alleged molestation of a relative that occurred during the time he was living here.

Bret Alan Smith of Griffin was arrested on Monday after an investigation conducted by the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office and the local office of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services.

The activity of which Smith is accused occurred over a roughly three-year period, sheriff’s Sgt. Austin Cannon said. Investigators held interviews with the alleged victim in the case and more than a half-dozen other children at Hero House Children’s Advocacy Center of Colquitt County in Moultrie.

No additional victims were identified during those interviews, Cannon said.

The center works with law enforcement, children services and prosecutors to assist potential victims of child abuse and gather forensic evidence.

Smith, 32, 320 Birdie Road, has been charged with rape, incest and child molestation.

Smith also could face legal issues in another jurisdiction based on information gleaned from the investigation here, Cannon said.

“I will probably be turning details of the case to Ashburn for possible further prosecution,” he said.

Smith has no prior felony record with the Georgia Department of Corrections and is not named on any sex offender list, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

A Colquitt  County Magistrate Court judge denied bond on Tuesday for Smith. Rape is considered one of the state’s “seven deadly sins” and if bond is granted, it would be set by a Superior Court judge.
