MOULTRIE -- Recently in Colquitt County Superior Court, Matthew J. O'Grady III, 37, Albertville, Ala., pleaded to criminal abandonment of a minor child and was sentenced to six years probation plus back child support of $25,051.14 and $7,600 in medical expenses.

"It's not normal," said Assistant District Attorney Brian McDaniel, "and we do not use the criminal charge to collect child support because most people are two months behind, three months behind. This is the rare individual that literally leaves his child behind."

Child support recovery actions usually are held in civil court, but because O'Grady had left the state and had been negligent for years, the matter warranted criminal prosecution, McDaniel said.
