MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center Monday night after he was shot in the face when a dropped gun went off. Another man was arrested when the gun was found to have allegedly been stolen.

Darren Wright, 20, of 215 Church St. in Ellington, was charged Tuesday with theft by receiving stolen property.

Moultrie police officers were called to Colquitt Regional at 8:36 p.m. Monday about the shooting. The officer met with a witness, who initially stated he and Wright were walking on Fourth Street Northwest when a black car pulled up beside them, and someone shot Wright in the face.

The witness took officers to the intersection of Third Street Northwest and Second Street Northwest and stated he and Wright were walking on a path towards Third Street Northwest when the car pulled up and the shooting took place. After the shooting, they met up with Darren Wright, who gave them a ride to Colquitt Regional. An officer saw a large amount of blood in the rear passenger side of a Mazda Protégé.

Darren Wright told the officer he was also walking in the area around where the shooting took place. Darren and the witness were asked if they were armed, and both allegedly stated they did not have a gun, and the officer searched the Protégé Darren drove to Colquitt Regional.

During the search of the Protégé, the officer allegedly found an unloaded Hi Point .45-caliber pistol under the driver’s seat. The officer ran a check of the pistol’s serial number, and it was found to have been reported stolen.

Another witness told officers she was told Derrick Wright’s pistol fell on the floor of a front porch and went off, shooting him in the face. Officers found the shooting happened at a house on Fifth Street Northwest, and the homeowner stated she had cleaned the blood with bleach because her children had been sick and she did not want them possibly exposed to additional germs.

A hospital spokesperson said Derrick Wright was treated for his injury and released Monday. Darren Wright was placed under arrest and was taken to Colquitt County Jail.
