A former Colquitt County coroner and his wife faced additional charges Monday related to several church burglaries over the last few months. They are also being investigated for additional burglaries here and in Thomas County.
Daniel Andrew Warburg, 38, and Billy Jo Warburg, 33, both of 430 Country Drive, were each charged with six counts of burglary. Daniel Warburg, who resigned in 2008 after almost three years as coroner, had also been charged related to a bench warrant.
Colquitt County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Shawn Bostick said an employee at Pine Grove Baptist Church on Bay Rockyford Road reported a Hewlett-Packard printer and a Hewlett-Packard monitor were stolen between midnight and 5 p.m. March 22. A lead came in to the sheriff’s office March 23 that Daniel Warburg was allegedly involved, and Bostick went to speak with him about it.
Bostick said Warburg admitted to taking the items, and he was placed under arrest. A search of the home led to the items, valued at $435, being recovered and returned to the church.
Billy Jo Warburg was charged as an accessory, Bostick said. She is not believed to have broken into the church, he said, but she allegedly drove her husband there and transported the stolen items.
Through investigation following the arrests, Bostick said property has been recovered that allegedly ties the Warburgs to four other church burglaries and a residential burglary that took place over the winter. The Warburgs were charged Monday with two additional burglaries at Pine Grove Baptist Church, a burglary at Autreyville Baptist Church on Highway 33 South and a burglary at Hopewell Baptist Church on Hopewell Church Road as well as the residential burglary.
The investigation also led to the recovery of items reported stolen in Thomas County, Bostick said. Investigators in Thomas County may add more charges pending the results of their investigation into the burglaries there.
Bostick said last week that the Warburgs were possible suspects in a burglary reported March 23 at Cool Springs Freewill Baptist Church, on Cool Springs Church Road in Norman Park, but he said Tuesday that evidence has not been found to link them to that crime.
