MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man was apprehended after he allegedly fired a gunshot into the ground then hit another man with the gun Wednesday evening.

Courtney Jamaine Mitchell, 26, of 720 13th St. S.W., was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

A Moultrie police officer was called to a house on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive about 7 p.m. Wednesday about shots being fired. The officer spoke with a witness, who stated she was at her house when she heard someone knocking at the door. She did not think anything about it until she heard gunshots and saw people leaving a house after the shooting stopped.

The witness stated she saw the shooter, later identified as Mitchell, and Henry Godfrey together, and they began to argue. The officer spoke with Godfrey, and he stated he and Mitchell did have an argument, but he would not tell what the alleged argument was about.

During the argument, Godfrey stated Mitchell allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired one round into the ground. Police said Godfrey then pushed Mitchell and attempted to run away, but Mitchell allegedly hit him in the head with the pistol, causing the pistol to fire a second time, then fled the scene. The witness stated Mitchell left the scene in a green Acura Legend.

Several officers responded to a house on West Central Avenue after a green Acura Legend matching the witness’s description was spotted there. Mitchell was placed under arrest and taken to Colquitt County Jail, and an officer allegedly found a pistol in the car along with a shell casing found at the scene at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
