MOULTRIE — Anne Norman’s love of riding her bicycle around Moultrie has been turned into a living memorial through the efforts of the Anne’s Bicycles for Children (ABC) Foundation. Thirty-seven children who have been victims of crime will receive bikes this year for Christmas through this organization’s efforts.

On Tuesday, bicycles bought with money donated to the organization were delivered to the arts center where they will be distributed to the families in time for Christmas. Karen Ambrose, a victim advocate in the Colquitt County district attorney’s office, gave ABC a list of names that had been complied through her office for its Santa project. Each bike was tagged with a child’s name and it will be given in an addition to the gifts the children will be receiving through the DA’s office. Ambrose said one mother was in tears because she could not believe that her children would be getting bikes, as well.

Margaret Morgan Stewart, who was the driving force behind ABC, said she had known Norman all of her life and wanted to do something as a tribute to her memory. So, she conceived the idea and put the foundation together with the help of community members like Amanda Statom, who helped facilitate connecting the DA’s office with the group and the Rev. Hugh Ward and Pat Priest, who handled the monetary donations for the group. Stewart said this would become an annual event.

“There’s nothing cuter than seeing a kid riding a bike,” she said.

Norman, who is deceased, rode many miles around town, said family members, and her last bicycle was immortalized as a statue in the sculpture garden at the Colquitt County Arts Center. A dedication ceremony was given in September by the Moultrie Service League for the sculpture, which was placed in honor of the 10 charter members of the league.

The foundation will be accepting donations throughout the year in preparation for next Christmas and contributions can be sent to ABC c/o First Presbyterian Church, 501 First St. S.E. in Moultrie.
