For Feb. 16
"The City of Moultrie should downsize by 15 percent and put that money to better causes while saving the taxpayers."
Glad to hear it
"I'm glad to read about the support group for caregivers. This service will definitely help you."
So, we are hicks
"If you want to know why we say young 'ens it's because we are hicks and proud of it. If you don't want to hear it, move up North."
"Someone wrote in the Tuesday, Feb. 12, edition of The Observer's Rant and Rave column that, 'If you haven't seen "Heaven's Gates, Hell's Flames," it's something you don't want to miss.' I have seen this film and it contains not one iota of truth. It was produced for the sole purpose of frightening the Hell out of people. It is fantasy pure and simple and nothing more. Heaven and Hell are right here on Earth. I know because I have experienced both. There is no other! Therefore, do not be deceived by those who would have you believe otherwise."
Not the facts
"In the Thursday, Feb. 7, edition of The Observer someone wrote in the Rant and Rave column that Thomas Paine said on his death bed that he wished he had never heard of the 'Age of Reason.' This is patently false. The fact is that just before Thomas Paine died on June 8, 1809, two clergymen gained access to his room hoping to hear him recant his (so-called) heresies. To their question concerning his religious opinions, Paine simply said: 'Let me alone; good morning.' Now, go read 'The Age of Reason' and learn the facts about what Thomas Paine believed. I must say that I agree with him totally and completely!"
"To the person who saw the little old lady greet everyone and no one returned her greetings, that's quite sad. However, don't judge everyone on a few people with no manners. I purposely speak to people sometimes just to see how many will return my greeting. Surprisingly, a lot of them do."
"I want to applaud the ultralite fliers who will volunteer to help find people who get lost. It makes a lot of sense to use these aircraft because they can fly so low and so slow. But the big advantage is that they are here right now and we don't have to wait for search flights to come from somewhere else."
"I'm glad to hear that some of the stores are planning to stay open a little later. This reminds me of the days when I was growing up and we all went to town on Saturdays and stayed until 8 and 9 o'clock. Seems like in those days we had more conversations with each other."
"I would like to say how much I appreciate all the downtown efforts. Too often people don't appreciate having a pretty, viable downtown shopping area except in the past tense when it has been boarded up and weeds are growing through the pavement."
