NORMAN PARK — The Colquitt County Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a Katrina Volunteer Appreciation Banquet Thursday at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center in Norman Park.

The dinner will include remarks by the center’s director, the Rev. Bill Townes; Mike Demott, chairman of the board for the Red Cross; the chapter’s executive director, Helen Sewell; and disaster chairman Sam Stephens, according to a letter to The Observer from Sewell.

The volunteers to be honored include individuals who served in the Red Cross office, served in the clinic, worked with individual evacuees and made phone calls or contributed services, Sewell said in the letter. At least 80 individuals from Colquitt County and surrounding counties volunteered to assist Katrina evacuees.

“The banquet is a small way to honor citizens who have given of their time and talents for the 249 evacuees who lived at the conference center for 20 days,” Sewell said. “As executive director of the Colquitt County American Red Cross, I am proud of the effort made by our community and honored to be part of a group who worked tirelessly to provide much needed help to the Katrina evacuees.”
