MOULTRIE — A South Georgian, born and raised in Camilla, has come to Moultrie to lead the Social Security Administration office on Rowland Drive.

Richard Hunnewell started as the manager of the office on Wednesday, but he comes with several years of experience with him. He replaced former manager Terrie Buehler, who was selected to become a district manager for Social Security offices in Memphis, Tenn.

Hunnewell said he started his career with Social Security as a claims representative in 1991. He has also served as a technical expert, management support specialist and operations superintendent at the Thomasville office.

In May of 2005, Hunnewell said he was one of 65 people chosen nationwide to participate in an 18-month leadership development program. He worked at the Baltimore office and was an analyst for the senior advisers there before completing his training and becoming a district-wide operations supervisor for Southwest Georgia.

Hunnewell went to school to work in hospital administration before being hired by Social Security at a college job fair, he said. The job became a career, and he has followed in the federal career path of his father, Charles, who served in the U.S. Air Force and worked at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany.

“It has been a good career choice for me,” Hunnewell said.

Having only been on the job for a few days, Hunnewell said he looks forward to getting to know the staff and learning about the office. He leads a team of 11 people at the office, and he believes they can serve the public very well there.

“I want everyone to be responsible, respectful and reliable to our customers,” Hunnewell said. “In doing so, we will be able to continue to serve Moultrie and the community well.”

Hunnewell said he is married to Dawn Hunnewell from Richland, and they have three children, Richie, 14, Rebekah, 12, and Rene Starr, 9.
