MOULTRIE -- A special election for the Colquitt County High School Board of Education seat recently vacated by the late Stine George is to be held in conjunction with the general election this fall.

"The board and school system are deeply saddened by the loss of Stine George, yet we must move on, and certainly Mr. George would have been the first to have said those exact words," Colquitt County Board of Education Chairman Jerry Meister said Monday.

Also Monday, the school board elected Roy Reeves, a sitting board member, to replace George as vice chairman. Reeves will rotate into the chairman's spot in January 2005.

The board has yet to appoint someone to represent District 1 in the interim. That person, who must meet residency and other requirements, would serve seven months until the November nonpartisan election.

The person elected in November would serve out the remaining term until December 2006.

"The board is very mindful of its responsibility and will move forward in making the appointment in all deliberate speed. And I suspect there will be recommendations and thoughts coming from District 1, and we certainly will be aware of those and do what is in the best interest of children," Meister said.
