MOULTRIE, Ga. — On May 3, the Colquitt County FFA Chapter held the 89th Annual FFA member and parent banquet. Members from the Willie J. Williams Middle School FFA Chapter, C.A. Gray Middle Chapter, C.A. Gray Jr. High Chapter, and Colquitt County High Chapter were recognized for each of their accomplishments during the 2018-2019 school year. The Star of Ag Placement, Star in Agriscience, Star Greenhand, and Star Discovery were also announced.
Each year high school students have the opportunity to apply for a local contest that is sponsored for a trip to the National FFA Convention and Expo held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Below are the names of each winner and the sponsor of the award.
The President’s Award was presented to Kirk Beacham and was sponsored by Funston Gin Company. The Ag Mechanics Award was presented to John Vance Livingston and was sponsored by DPW Locksmith. The Home Improvement Award was presented to Amber Murphy and was sponsored by Baell Mercantile Company. The Crop Production Award was presented to Connor Hart and was sponsored by Whittington Insurance. The Leadership Award was presented to Chase Willis and was sponsored by Brent Chitty State Farm Insurance. The Cotton Production Award was presented to Henry Underwood and was sponsored by Mobley Gin. The Home Garden Award was presented to Mackenzie Blair and was sponsored by Farmer’s Seed Company. The Livestock Award was presented to Mackenzie Blair and was sponsored by Moultrie Livestock. The Record Keeping Award was presented to JoJo Johnson. The Horticulture Award was presented to Ivey cooper and was sponsored by Gay’s Tire Service. The advisor’s trip was sponsored by Demott Tractor Company.
Garrett Griner was named the Colquitt County Star in Ag Placement which was sponsored by the Colquitt County Farm Bureau. Mitchell Riley was named the Colquitt County Star in Agriscience which was sponsored by Rowell Auctions. Kaitlyn Hart was the Colquitt County Star in Agribusiness
Montana Hall was awarded the Randolph Gibbs Memorial Scholarship, a scholarship sponsored by the family of Randolph Gibbs, in memory of him.
The Star Greenhand was awarded to Mason Bass and Raylee Sparkman, and Laurie Burt and Christie Deariso were awarded the Star Discovery.
This year Colquitt County had two proficiency state wins, and two State Stars. Mitchell Riley won his proficiency in the area of Nursery Operations and John Vance Livingston won his proficiency in the area of Agriculture Mechanics. Garrett Griner was named the South Region Star on Agricultural Placement and Kaitlyn Hart was named the State Star in Agribusiness at the 90th FFA State Convention.
Additionally, the Honorary Membership award was presented to Shawn Collins recognizing his outstanding contribution to the Agriculture Education Program in Colquitt County. Collins was an agriculture teacher for many years in Colquitt County and many of his former state winners were in attendance to recognize his accomplishment. Accompanying Collins at the banquet were his wife Greta and two children Lara and Judd.
