About 300 sixth graders at Willie J. Williams Middle School formed the breast cancer ribbon on Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium March 13 in honor of one of their teachers. Amy Putnam, a sixth grade social studies teacher, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, said her husband, Warren. After that she’ll have surgery then radiation to try to destroy the cancer. ‘Her attitude is great and we know this will have a positive outcome,’ Warren Putnam said. ‘The support from the faculty and students at Willie J. Williams has been awesome.’ He said his wife hopes to return to the classroom before next Christmas. Helping to hold up the banner are Warren Putnam, in the center; Amy Putnam’s sister-in-law, Ava Joyner; and her cousin, Julie Crews.
