MOULTRIE, Ga. — Madison Newell and Gage Nichols have been selected to attend the 54th annual Washington Youth Tour, a once in a lifetime leadership experience made possible through the generosity of the electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) in Georgia, including Colquitt EMC.
Newell and Nichols were carefully selected through an application process which included personal interviews, a Colquitt EMC spokeswoman said. They will join delegates selected across the state of Georgia and the nation. This year’s tour, which takes place June 13-20, will expose students to the fast-paced world of politics and leadership. Delegates will be given the opportunity to tour Washington D.C., participate in leadership experiences and meet with elected officials.
Newell is involved in many areas of the fine arts. She marches in the Blue Devil Brigade, plays in the Show Choir Band, plays in Jazz Band, and she also acts with the Blue Devils Players. She is active with the Beta and Key clubs at Tift County High School. She also participates in community service with the Disabled American Veterans and the Peanut Butter & Jesus program.
Nichols is a member of the Tift County FFA, Berrien County 4-H, Berrien County Youth Livestock Association, Young Farmer Internship Program, and Tift County High School Agricultural & Environmental Sciences Career Academy. He is also active in Beta Club, where he has participated in various community service projects, such as volunteering at the animal shelter. He also raises and exhibits livestock and is active in his church.
Colquitt EMC recently met with the delegates and their families to discuss the trip and answer any questions. Both delegates are excited about the upcoming trip and feel it is a tremendous honor to have been chosen. Both delegates will have many first-time experiences during the tour, such as flying for the first time.
Colquitt EMC offers the Washington Youth Tour program to high school juniors who reside in the household of a Colquitt EMC member. Applicants must hold a GPA of a 2.5 or higher. Colquitt EMC releases the applications after the first of the year, and encourages high school juniors to apply next year for this amazing opportunity.
