Proper nutrition and adequate physical activity are important at any age but can play a critical role in our lives as we age. Millions of older adults are taking stock of their health and hitting the gym to get the physical activity they need to stave off chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and high blood pressure. Regular physical activity has beneficial effects on most (if not all) organ systems, and consequently prevents a broad range of health problems and diseases.

To help older residents get the physical activity they need, the Moultrie YMCA has partnered with the SilverSneakers Fitness Program.

“The Moultrie Y has been chosen as a SilverSneakers provider,” said CEO Greg Coop in an email. “This is a program for Medicare-eligible folks (with an insurance plan that offers the program) to enjoy the benefits of the Y at no cost. We can check eligibility if they call or come by the YMCA.”

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program has been proven to reduce health care costs by improving the health and well-being of members, helping them become active and motivating them to stay that way, according to a press release from the YMCA. With the SilverSneakers premier network, members have access to a variety of participating locations throughout the country, including Moultrie YMCA.

The Moultrie YMCA offers the signature SilverSneakers Muscular Strength & Range of Movement class, the Y press release said. This is a low-intensity total body conditioning class to increase flexibility, strength and circulation, and to improve the cardiovascular system through the use of hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a SilverSneakers ball. The SilverSneakers Muscular Strength & Range of Movement class is offered 9-9:45 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

To find out if you are eligible for SilverSneakers, please contact your health plan or stop by the Moultrie YMCA at 601 26th Ave SE and ask for Stacy Flieder. For more information on the program, call toll-free 1-888-423-4632 or visit www.silversneakers.com.
