On Saturday, the downtown Moultrie courthouse square will be the scene of a countywide yard sale. Bargains of all sorts will be on display as various groups and individuals from our community come together for this annual event. And yes, there will be food vendors to keep the shoppers from becoming famished.

Sponsored by the Downtown Association, this event has developed a special camaraderie among those who participate. It’s one of the advantages of a small country town — the ability to draw the community into a central location for various celebrations and communitywide events.

Not only do such gatherings have practical business application, they are also therapeutic in that they underscore the very sense of community — perhaps an advantage over larger communities. We often hear of people who have moved away to larger metro areas and reminisce about the special times they experienced in our community.

We applaud the leadership and the energies of those people who bring about such events as the yard sale. It’s just one scene in a great panorama of community life. In today’s Editor’s Mailbag, we hear from a former resident who remembers the special qualities of our community.
