Dear editor:

It is once again time to turn our attention to the Colquitt County Relay for Life! The Steering Committee for 2006 has been hard at work planning for several months and has wonderful ideas to help insure the success of the 2006 Relay.

As chairman of this year’s event, I would like to make the community aware of the wonderful group that has come together for this cause on May 12-13 and to say thank you to all of them for serving.

Patti Garcia is co-chairman and will serve as the 2007 chairman. Team recruitment is under the leadership of Carrie Parker. She is assisted by Carol Bannister, Becky Bevacqua, Emily Hammack, Andrew Christensen, April Mathis, Nicole Gilbert and Lauren Howell.

Corporate recruitment is under the direction of Sonya Aldridge and Glenda Bridges. Gail Hill and Shirley Johnson are working on events for cancer survivors and the breakfast to honor all survivors.

Connie Fritz and Joy Jones are working together to plan activities to make the Relay a fun event for all ages. Dorothy Horne and Louise Bivins have agreed to serve as treasurers and Ameris has graciously agreed to allow team captains meetings to be held at their facility.

Pat Gay will be working with businesses and organizations who contribute in-kind sponsorships.

Jay Usury and Crusin’ 94 will be broadcasting from the event and assisting with announcements. Dana Barrow is serving as secretary for the committee and Jan Barrow is in charge of mission delivery.

Jan also serves as president of the Colquitt County Cancer society.

Amy Johnson and Steve Lazarus are working on publicity for the event. Sonny Murphy is in charge of logistics and Bruce Hamm has volunteered to handle security.

Suzanne Christensen and Donna Herndon make up a new committee this year which is known as the “Thank You Committee.”

We are excited to have Linda Shiver and family and the Girl Scouts of Colquitt County collecting money for luminaries and torches. They are also in charge of the Luminary Ceremony at 9:30 p.m. on May 12.

Lisa Zeanah and Carol Aguero have agreed to assist with a community-wide fundraiser.

With such energetic, hard working and dynamic individuals working together as a team, the 2006 Colquitt County Relay for Life will be a success.

Please help us to “Sock it to Cancer through a World Class Relay” on May 12-13. Our goal is to raise $125,000.

For more information, you may call Sharon Herndon at 985-8090.

Sharon Herndon,
