Can you imagine the horror? Trapped while the building you’re in burns, you can only watch as the flames inch closer. By the time two chicken houses near Berlin burned to the ground, more than 20,000 birds, according to some reports , were dead.

The irony is, even if they could have been saved, their days were already numbered.

Chickens are inquisitive, intelligent animals who experience REM sleep, meaning that they dream. Like cows, pigs and humans, they also love their young: When left to live in peace, hens cluck to their eggs, and the chicks peep back from inside the shells .

Although they can live for more than a decade, hens raised for their eggs are exhausted, and their egg production begins to wane when they’re about 2 years old. More than 100 million “spent” hens are slaughtered every year. They’re shackled upside down, their throats are cut open by machines and they’re immersed in scalding water for feather removal.

They’re often conscious throughout the entire process.

If you don’t want to support such cruelty, choose one of the vegan eggs on the market and other vegan foods. Visit www.PETA.org for more information, recipes and a free vegan starter kit.
