I am currently writing a book entitled “A Circle of Soldiers.” It is about our Colquitt County servicemen who died in the Vietnam War.
Recently, I completed a book of short stories, one of which was about my brother-in-law, Bob Stover, who fought in Vietnam. It is called “Sacrifice.”
In this short story I include the names of the 31 soldiers who died in Vietnam from Colquitt County. What a huge sacrifice this was for a small southwest Georgia county and for our nation.
While my three-year-old granddaughter looked on as I copied the names from the memorial on the square, the importance of these men, their sacrifices, and their stories (including their families’) greatly moved me.
Many of you in the community know me as Mr. T, a recently retired school teacher. It is my hope that the families and friends of these fallen soldiers will contact me to share their memories so the rest of our community can know more about their lives and their sacrifices.
Having lost our 18-year-old daughter Katie in a car accident, I know about sadness and grief, but at the same time we want her memory to live on in our hearts and minds. With that in mind, I hope that those of you who had a loved one who died in Vietnam will feel prompted to contact me on my cell phone at 229-798-0621 or at my email address firstname.lastname@example.org. Together we have an incredible story to tell.
