Colquitt County couldn’t track down Brookstone High in the Packer Invitational at Sunset Country Club on Saturday, but will get another crack at the Cougars on Monday.
Brookstone won the 18th Packers Invitational with a 290 on Saturday and also had the tournament’s low medalist in Mercer Clark, who shot and defeated Camden County’s Mitch Lomis in a playoff.
The Packers were 17 shots back at 307.
Colquitt County and Brookstone will see each other on Monday when they play in the Atlanta Athletic Club Invitational in Duluth.
Colquitt County coach Donald Dale says he thinks his team can shave some shots off that 307 when it plays on Monday. He certainly hopes the Packers play better when they play host to the Region 1-AAAAA tournament on April 23.
“We didn’t play that well for playing on our home course,” Dale said in summing up his team’s performance on Saturday.
“If we can get to 300, we’ll have a chance to get to the state tournament. But I don’t know if it will win the region.”
The Packers were led by senior Von Stripling, who shot a 3-over 75.
Bowen Aguero had a 76, Lee Wright a 77 and Eli Stripling a 79.
McKenzie Blanchett shot a 80.
“We were under 300 coming down 15,” Dale said. “Then we let it get away.”
Brookstone, a Class A school in Columbus, also got a 72 from James Clark; a 73 from Parker Derby, one of the nation’s top junior players; and a 75 from David James.
The Cougars’ 290 was a strong round, but still five shots off the tournament record set by Milton last year.
The Colquitt County junior varsity team shot a 335 and was led by Tyler Key, who had a 78.
Eli Crosby shot an 83, Griffin Dunn shot an 85 and Jordan Williams turned in an 89.
Charlie Zeanah shot 101.
Alpharetta shot a 300 to place second on Saturday.
Whitefield Academy, a private Christian school in Mableton, was third with a 305.
Colquitt County and Roswell each shot 307.
The rest of the field included Northside-Columbus, 308; Lassiter, 316; Columbus, 316; Etowah, 318; Pierce County, 319; Veterans, 322; Blessed Trinity, 323; Lowndes, 325; Thomas County Central, 328; Valdosta, 332; Northwest Whitfield, 333; Lee County, 333; Colquitt County JV, 335; North Atlanta, 340; Worth County, 353; Houston County, 372; and Hardaway, 398.
The Colquitt County girls team will play host to the Lady Packer Invitational, which will tee off at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Sunset Country Club.
