The Colquitt County boys tennis team clinched the Region 1-AAAAA regular-season championship and a berth in the state tournament with its 5-0 victory over Lowndes on Thursday in Valdosta.
Even with an April 12 Senior Night date with Coffee remaining, the Packers, now 15-2 overall, will claim first place in the region and get a first-round bye in the Region 1-AAAAA tournament, which will be held at Packer Park.
The Colquitt boys needed to win at Lowndes to claim the title and they made sure there was no doubt about the outcome.
At No. 1 singles, Andrew Harvin dealt the Vikings’ Edward Fazylov just his second loss of the season with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Bo Blalock won at No. 2 singles over Zach Touchton 6-1, 6-0. And David Forehand won over Chase Miley at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Brandon Oaks and Nick Nichols won over Dylan Whiddon and Ben Burkhalter 6-2, 6-4. And Ricky Patel and John Barber defeated Josh Fricker and J.T. Bush 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
“We started sluggishly again,” Packers coach Grant Hammack said. “We might be a little tired. We have played a lot of tennis lately.”
The Packers also swept through the extra matches with Coby King winng 5-3 and 4-1; Nic Mobley winning 4-1 and 4-3; and Ridge Underwood winning 5-3, 4-0.
The Colquitt County girls fell 2-3 to the Vikettes and will take a 8-9 overall record and 1-6 region record into their season finale.
Erica Mobley won at No. 1 singles, defeating Taylor Vinge 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Hannah Radney gave the Lady Packers another point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles.
The No. 3 singles match lasted over four hours before Conley Ward fell 3-6, 7-5, 5-7.
The Lady Packers No. 1 doubles team of Rachel Funderburk and Ansley Moore fell to Alden Minick and Ansleigh Young 1-6, 4-6. And Haley Cash and Aislin Sheffield lost at No. 2 doubles to Lori Taylor and Taylor Williams 7-5, 2-6, 3-6.
In extra mtaches, Desirae Cash fell 2-8; Catie Statom won 8-4; and Lindsey Stapleton and Heather Hardy won 8-0.
