MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High golf team got a 70 from Clarke Hendrick, a 72 from Billy Edwards and a 73 from John Fordham to take second place in the Trojan Invitational held Wednesday at Grand Island Club in Albany.

The event had been scheduled for Monday, but was postponed by rain.

Brookstone of Columbus, led by low medalist Robert Swift’s 68, shot a 294 for first place.

The Packers were just one shot back at 295.

Two Region 1-AAAAA teams — Coffee and Tift County — tied for third with a 308.

Lee County, the tournament host, tied for fifth with Thomas County Central at 315.

Bainbridge was seventh with a 334 and was followed by Valdosta, with a 343; Worth County, with a 346; Jones County, with a 356; and Hardaway, with a 379.

The Packers also got an 80 frm both Davis Edwards and Preston Mobley.

“We were in really good shape late in the round to get in around 290 or 292, but we just didn’t finish a couple of rounds,” Packers coach Donald Dale said. “But I was really happy with the way they played.

“They didn’t do anything bad today.”

The 72 turned in by Billy Edwards was a pleasant surprise.

He had had surgery on a toe and was force to miss Saturday’s tournament at Bainbridge Country Club.

But he received a lesson from Sunset golf pro Bob Windom last Thursday and hit the ball all weekend, getting his swing worked out, Dale said.

“He really played a nice round of golf today,” Dale said.

Hendrick played well to shoot 2-under and Fordham was 1-over despite missing several birdie putts.

“That’s all right,” Dale said. “We’re making progress.”

The Colquitt County varsity girls also played at Grand Island on Wednesday and, despite 72 from low medalist Anna Leigh Keith, the Lady Packers came in second behind Tift County.

The Lady Devils got a 73 from freshman Brittany Jarrett and a 78 from junior Brooke Spinks to score a 151.

With Jaycee Eunice’s 92 added to Keith’s 72, the Lady Packers scored a 164.

The Lee County girls shot a 198, Lowndes shot a 200 and Thomas County Central had a 245.
